This makes Neil think that his father is still trying to hide the truth from him so when his fat her comes to meet him, he runs away instead of confronting him. All the negative feelings developing in Neil’s mind are released in the form of anger when his father comes to look for him. Due to the fact that Neil is only a child, he is not able to understand why his father chooses to hide his decision from him and this causes Neil to act impulsively. Furthermore, war not only affects Neil, but it also affects his father because his father must leave his family and go fight for his country. As a father, the most disheartening thing about having to go fight a war is that he will not be able to watch his children grow up. Neil realizes this when he remembers that â€Å"[His father] had promised to show [him] how to skate. [He] had it all planned how [he would] really surprise [his] dad and turn out to be a skating champion and everything, and now he [could not] even be there to see [it]. All because he had to go and sit in some trench† (4). The fact that his father must leave has a significant impact on him as well because he remembers all the promises that his father made him and now he would not be able to fulfill them. To any child, the thought of growing up without a father seems dreadful but for Neil, the war is stealing his father away from him. Moreover, a war can have a significant impact on a childs emotional and psy chological health. Children whose parents are going to war tend to restrict their emotional expression. Eventually, this self-restriction causes the build-up of feelings within the individual leading to an explosive release of them. Neils inability to express his own emotions causes him to think that †¦that maybe if [he stays] hidden for too long enough, then [his father will not] join the army†¦ Maybe it would be because [his father would] stay looking for [him] (4). Due to his lack of emotional expression, Neil chooses to run away and hide in a barn instead of confronting his father and communicating with him about his problems. Contrary to his opinion that if he runs away things will get better, things in fact only seem to get worse. His night in the barn causes further damaging on Neil’s emotional well-being as he starts to have thoughts of loneliness. The negative consequences of his choice make him feel as though no one will understand what he is going through and instead of supporting him, they will criticize him. However, this is not the case but due to his lack of communication, his situation continues to worsen to the extent that he feels forced to lie to his family members about why he chooses to run away. Along with feelings of loneliness, Neil also experiences thoughts that he is unwanted by his family. This has a great psychological impact on his mind as now he feels completely alone and unwanted. When Neil is hiding in the barn he sees Mrs. Currie holding onto Bud with one hand and Teddy Hartley with the other. He thinks that If [he] was down there, how could she hold onto [him] if shes only got two hands and Bud and Teddy Hartley to look after? And [right then he] thinks [that Ms. Currie] must be pretty glad [he is not] around (5). This puts Neil in an uncomfortable situation within his own mind as he starts to question the integrity of his relationship with his family. This leads up to him believing that he is unwanted by his family. Also, the psychological impact is not restricted to just family matters as his way of thinking and childhood get corrupted as well. When Neil is first informed about his fathers choice to go to war, he starts imagining images of war and death. As onl y a 10-year-old, Neil should not be exposed to such inappropriate ideas, however, due to the war, Neil is constantly thinking about it. In the story, it is evident that Neil despises the war because it leads to the separation of him and his father, however, when his father comes looking for him, he begins to throw rocks and golfs balls at him in rage. Neils irrational actions are symbolic of the war overseas, and he ends up creating a war-like situation between him and his father. Although, instead of getting mad and being aggressive in return, Neils father maintains his calmness showing that he understands Neils feelings and is willing to restore their bond. However, seeing his fathers attitude towards the situation only amplifies his feelings of anger and betrayal and instead of retreating, he continues to harm his father to the extent which his father falls to the ground in pain. This ultimately shows how much of a psychological impact the war has on him. Due to it, he is forced to conceal his true emotions and express them in a form of violence in which his father gets hurt. Finally, the ongoing war causes a terrifying spread of fear within Neil. Neil extremely fears for his father well-being and his near-future. When Neil first hears about his fathers decision to the join the army, he is taken by surprise that [his father] joined the army? Joined the army! Our dad? Once he is able to process the information, the fear establishes as Neil remembers his fathers past life as †¦a salesman. Learning that his father is going off to war, he fears for his fathers life and cannot accept the fact that he may never come back home. This, in turn, disables Neil from forgiving his father for the fear that his father causes him. Neil fears for his father so much that he is reminded of his Uncle Frank who died in the previous war and fears the same for his father. However, smoking will never be chic as it causes additions that seem impossible to break. Smoking causes premature aging from the heat of the cigarette. While every time a cigarette is smoked the skin is aging faster than natural, also virtually every organ in the body including the heart, lungs, and skin is being harmed. Robert Frost Desert Places and Stopping by Woods on a Snowy Evening Essay Robert Frost successfully taken reader’s imagination on a journey through the wintertime with his poems â€Å"Desert Places† and â€Å"Stopping by Woods on a Snowy Evening. † Frost’s New England background in these two poems reflect the beautiful scenery that is present in our part of the country. Even though these poems both have winter settings they contain completely different tones. One poem has a feeling of a depressing loneliness, and the other of feeling welcome. The poems show how the same setting can have totally different impacts on an individual depending on their mind set at the moment. These poems are both made up of simple stanzas and diction, but they are not simple poems, and could be easily misunderstood. In the poem â€Å"Desert Places† the male speaker is traveling through the countryside on a beautiful winter evening and is completely surrounded with the feeling of loneliness. The narrator views the snow-covered field as a desert place. â€Å"A blanker whiteness of benighted snow/ With no expression, nothing to express. † Whiteness and blankness are two key ideas in this poem. The white symbolizes open and empty spaces, the snow is a white blanket that covers up everything living. The blankness symbolizes the emptiness that the speaker feels. To him there is nothing around except for the snow and his lonesome thoughts. The speaker in this poem shows jealousy towards the woods. â€Å"The woods around it have it? it is theirs. † The woods symbolize people and society. They have something that belongs to them that they can feel a part of. The speaker is so alone inside that he feels that he is not a part of anything. Nature has a way of bringing everything together to act as one, even animals are a part of the winter. All animals are smothered in their lairs, / I am too absent spirited to count. † The snow makes everything around it white, and to him it is a feeling of numbness. â€Å"The loneliness includes me unawares. † The speaker has seemingly lost his zest for life. He is unable to express his feelings easily because of this numbness, also he is in denial about feeling alone. He does not care anything about too much â€Å"They cannot scare me with their empty space. † He is saying that no one cares how I feels, and that he does not need anyone else. I have in me so much nearer home/ To scare myself with my own desert places. † The speaker to realizes that he had shut himself off from the world. He recognizes that the winter place is like his life, because he let depression and loneliness be in his life and take over like the snow had sneak up on the plains and covered it. If he continues to let these dominate his life eventually everything would be exactly like what the snow does to nature. â€Å"Stopping by Woods on a Snowy Evening† is a much happier and more upbeat poem than â€Å"Desert Places,† and the titles alone proves this. This poem is about stopping to enjoy life. â€Å"But I have promises to keep, / and miles to go before I sleep. † The speaker in this poem was a very busy man who never had time for anything. Readers can sense a regret now. The man would like to stay and enjoy the woods, â€Å"The woods are lovely, dark and deep. † The speaker seems concerned about what people would think about him just stopping in the middle of nowhere for no apparent reason. The other is very happy one that lifts the spirit. Though these poems are different they are also similar is some ways. They show two extremes of the same emotion that being alone can be positive or negative it just depends on your mind frame. Loneliness can be depressing, or it can be a time to see your thoughts and feelings without the pressures. Robert Frost successfully created two winter scenes with different outcomes. The first, â€Å"Desert Places† is a sad poem about loneliness and loss of enthusiasm and â€Å"Stopping by Woods on a Snowy Evening† is an uplifting poem about enjoying the simple things in life.
